“I Want to Go Home!” (Recorded Webinar)
“I Want to Go Home!” is a recorded webinar designed to help care partners appreciate the meaning behind the words to determine what the person living with dementia is really trying to communicate. Explore common reasons people make requests that seem unreasonable or impossible, as well as why responding to such requests can be confusing and frustrating. You will learn ways to provide better responses that meet the expressed desire, intent, or need. This webinar will also help you understand how your words and actions make a difference in your relationship, the outcome of an incident, and the potential for future issues. A dynamic assessment plan to improve the outcome of your interactions is discussed, and a demonstration of awareness, knowledge, and skills that may be used in these situations is presented.
By the end of this webinar, you will be able to:
- Discuss at least four possible reasons people living with dementia ask to go home
- Describe at least three brain function changes that cause our common answers to these requests to be ineffective or distressing
- Identify simple assessment strategies and techniques to respond to these requests
