Biographical Information
For more than 30 years Bonnie has worked in the field of Social Work. She taught for over 14 years at the University of Washington Graduate School of Social Work and at the UW Professional & Continuing Education Program in Care Management. Bonnie has worked as a Palliative Care Consultant at Seattle Children’s Medical Center, Evergreen Healthcare, Harrison Hospital and as a Mental Health Therapist at Kaiser Permanent. Bonnie presently works as Clinical Director at Whitmire and Associates and redpointSeattle, Care Management Services. Bonnie’s aspiration throughout her career has been to bring Mindfulness Meditation into the workplace. She studied at the Metta Institute, an offshoot of the Zen Hospice Program, in San Francisco and studied MBSR for Healthcare Professionals at the UW School of Medicine. She continues to practice, learn and teach Mindfulness in her everyday life, facilitating mindfulness groups, supporting staff as a mindfulness supervisor and teaching mindfulness in the workplace. The past few years Bonnie has utilized her practice of sitting mindfully in the present moment, listening deeply, as her mother traveled through her dementia journey. She learned there are ways to communicate at a slower pace, both listening and attending to her mother's language, emotions and behaviors. Bonnie plans to continue learning about dementia and is excited to be a student of Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care Training Certification Program. Bonnie has received numerous awards over the past 30 years including, Soros Foundations Project on Death in America Social Work Leadership Award. She was nominated in 2012 for the UW Award for Excellence for Distinguished Teaching and received the UW SSW Graduate Student Choice Teaching Award in 2013 & 2015. She has also been member of the Washington State End of Life Coalition Steering Committee, and is a founding member of the Social Work in Hospital and Palliative Care Network and author and recipient of numerous grants.
