Teepa Snow Presents:
“How to Talk to Family Members Who Seem to Be Resisting Help and Guidance”
When someone in the family is experiencing symptoms of some form of dementia that make life problematic and challenging, there are three roads that families typically take:
1. Realize they will not be able to manage their loved one’s care and needs on their own and reach out for guidance and assistance.
2. Try to help their loved one for a period of time, before declaring an emergency and critical need for help due to a major event that is risky, dangerous, or overwhelming.
3. Continue to try to function as normal, despite multiple events where danger has been noted or problems are growing.
In this session sponsored by Senior Helpers, we will explore some strategies to help these families move from their dysfunctional status quo to an improved life for all involved with support and care by others. The use of curiosity, empathy, validation, forced choice, and relationship-building can turn the tide or at least end the suspense, until circumstances change. These are the skills we will work with to address the lack of action and active resistance.
