Teepa Talk: Northcentral Technical College, Wausau, WI
February 1 @ 8:00 am - 4:00 pm CST
Northcentral Technical College (NTC) is pleased to host one of America’s leading educators on dementia and Alzheimer’s, Teepa Snow again in 2019.
Teepa will present the following sessions:
Baby Boomers as Caregivers
There is a very large number of individuals in the group called ‘Baby Boomers’ in the United States. They are facing many new and complex challenges as children of elderly parents, spouses and siblings of aging individuals, and parents of grown children with grandchildren support needs. The ‘Baby Boomers’ are frequently referred to as the ‘sandwich generation’ as they are experiencing caregiving pressure from both sides: their parents and their children. As a group, they are rapidly approaching the age of typical and traditional retirement, but things are not going as planned for many. This session will look at the roles baby boomers are taking on, what is working and what is not going as well. It will also examine the issues that the boomers will face as they begin to require support services and changing housing needs due to aging and dementia-related issues. This session will also address ways in which the baby boomers can prepare for the aging process.
Managing Behavior: Start With Yourself!
This session helps care providers recognize and appreciate the role that their behaviors, words, actions, and reactions play in the behaviors that typically seen in people living with dementia. Emphasis will be placed on providing learners with alternative approaches and responses that are effective in promoting more positive interactions and outcomes. The goal is to help caregivers manage their own behaviors to change patterns rather than focusing trying the get the person with dementia to “behave themselves”.
