Australia – Here we Come!!!!
Be on the look out, mates!
Heat up the billy!
Come August 11th, Teepa will be in the Land Down Under! Who’s along for the trip? Dick Snow, my husband of over 40 years, and Courtney, our International PAC Services Lead. What am I doing? Well, I am kicking off my trip with a landing in Sydney to get through customs after a flight from LAX that will take 15.5 hours. Yuck! If all goes well, then it’s on to Tasmania. We have a program on August 12th for the staff of the Wicking Centre.
As part of the University of Tasmania, this group does outstanding work at getting info out. They are known ’round the world, and they do it free of charge! We are coming together to offer a public event in the evening! On the evening of the 12th, I will be presenting a community program from 6-7:30 pm on Strategies for Living Well (or at least Better) After the Diagnosis! Click here to register!
When we are done that night, we’ll have to raise a pint – It’s Dick’s Birthday! He gets to celebrate the big 65, on our first full day in the country, near where our daughter, Manda, spent time after she finished college, many years ago!
After a day of touring the pier area, we take off for Adelaide. While I am there, I plan to meet up with Kate Swaffer, from DAI a long time friend and colleague. She is one of the most amazing advocates for those living with dementia it has ever been my privilege to meet. I am both humbled and honoured to serve as a supporter/advisor in the DAI organization.
On the 15th, I will be working with Dementia Australia – Adelaide to provide a day long program addressing Challenges, Activities, and Skill Building in the World of Dementia. Click here to register, seats are filling fast.
After a couple more days of touring about and exploring what the area has to offer, Dick and I will head to Melbourne. Dementia Australia – Melbourne and I will provide a workshop on the 20th. Click here to register or find out more about this event- again don’t wait too long, the seats are filling!
Finally, a quick flight over to Sydney. We finish off our tour of the eastern side of Australia with a stop in Sydney. Uniting Australia is sponsoring a private session in the morning for front line staff. In the afternoon there is a public event on Understanding All Involved and Possible Behaviours in Dementia and Providing Support. To register, please contact Lana Richards at firstname.lastname@example.org
A big question, for me, before I even start my trip is… After this trip, what happens next in the Land Down Under? I am hoping to get a chance to meet at least a few of my friends from our on-line connections.
We have Certified mates from Perth, Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne. We have someone we know who owns Senior Helper Home Care offices. We know so many family members from our on-line connections. Most of all I have many good friends in Australia who are living with dementia who are very aware there is much to be done to improve the culture of support and inclusion! So where can we go from here to address the many human rights issue, significant care support concerns, and real need for greater awareness, knowledge, and skill to get us to be truly friendly and connected!
