This is session one of the four-part series Providing Care Support in Ways that Are Accepted by the Person Living with Dementia.
This series is designed to provide people who are seeking to help others with better hands-on skills in areas of self-care that traditionally and typically create challenges or result in frustration, resistance, or neglect. The purpose of these sessions is to provide learners with options and alternatives that promote shared engagement and collaboration. Each session will involve people living with dementia, role playing, task and skill exploration, and discussions.
Session 1 - Communicating through Distress (September 26, 2018 - 11:00am - 1:00pm Eastern)
Session 2 - Oral Hygiene Concerns and Options for GEMS States (October 16, 2018 - 11:00am - 1:00pm Eastern)
Session 3 - Personal Care (Bathing, Dressing) for GEMS States (November 19, 2018 - 10:30am - 12:30pm Eastern)
Session 4 - Medications & Mealtime Concerns - Options for GEMS States (December 3, 2018 - 10:30am - 12:30pm Eastern)
Session 1 is designed to build responsive (vs. reactionary) skills when confronted with someone who is distressed and is not necessarily aware of the real situation, time frame, or location.
- How to reflect and why
- Is it OK to lie
- Wanting to see or talk to people who have died
- Wanting to go home or get out of here
- Needing to get to work or take care of someone or something
- Seeking justice for a situation or against a perceived wrong
Once we explore responses to some of the most common issues, we will attempt to address real life issues that are provided by attendees.
