LeadingAge Connecticut is proud to present a day long dementia educational program with Teepa Snow, one of America's leading educators on dementia. Her teaching style is extraordinarily unique in that she is able to accurately demonstrate and model for her audience the struggle and challenges dementia creates for all parties involved.

Sorting Out the Three D's: Delirium, Depression and Dementia
This session will help providers recognize and respond more accurately to reduce 'non-helpful' hospitalizations, avoid delays in medical attention for acute illness, non-treatment of treatable conditions, and pre-mature discharge of residents who might be able to stay in the community.

The goals of the session:
•    to recognize the value and importance of getting the right diagnosis for a resident
•    to compare and contrast among depression, dementia and delirium
•    to use simple screening and assessment strategies and techniques to identify what is happening
•    to provide helpful and specific information to health providers about symptoms to optimize their ability to supply best treatment and care for your residents

Recognizing & Assessing Pain When Dementia is Part of the Picture
This session is designed to help professional caregivers provide more effective and accurate assessments of pain status and possible medical emergencies when dementia is present.

The goals of the session:
•    Identify common signals or signs that people with dementia exhibit when 'something' is wrong versus when they are having a 'bad' day
•    Identify some of the most common causes for acute changes in function, behavior, or alertness/distress
•    Discuss effective techniques to report changes in behaviors to other health care providers unfamiliar with the person who has dementia so that appropriate interventions are provided in a timely manner

Eating & Nutritional Issues in Dementia Care
This session will provide caregivers with in-depth information about possible factors that affect intake for individuals with dementia.  It will also help them identify concerns and intervene to promote safe and effective eating behaviors and programs throughout the progression of the disease.

The goals of the session:
•    Discuss aspects of dementia that affect nutrition and oral intake
•    Match common issues at each level of dementia to interventions that address nutritional or oral intake concerns at that point
•    Determine whether nutrition and eating support is being optimized at each level based on the person's abilities, needs and disease status

6.0 Nursing Home Administrator CEU’s will be distributed at the end of the program
